Odonate is not a familiar word; dragonfly is. Despite the ever-increasing popularity of the insect, for a layperson, it was all just dragonflies. Dragonflies and damselflies, together known as odonates are one of the most ancient creatures in our planet.
Even in biological sciences, odonates were part of the ‘lesser life-forms’, lagging behind mammals, birds, butterflies, amphibians, and snakes. The recent decades have seen a renewed interest in odonates, not only for their aesthetic value but as a vital part of the living world. They are emerging as the leading subject in scientific research as one of the most ecologically important species.
Happy to inform you all that in Kerala too, odonates are now given its long-due recognition. Society for Odonate Studies (SOS) is an organisation of dragonfly-lovers, citizen scientists, academics and researchers, formed exclusively for the cause of Odonates. SOS, in co-operation with other groups of naturalists, aims to create public awareness of odonates through its publications and research programmes. Those at the helm of SOS have vast experience in odonate – related activities. We welcome all friends of dragonflies and damselflies across the world!
