WORLD SPARROW DAY 2018
THRISSUR, ERNAKULAM & MALAPPURAM
World Sparrow Day (WSD) observed on March 20. The theme of the WSD 2018 was “I Love Sparrows”. As the part of WSD 2018, we conducted a sparrow count in Malappuram, Thrissur and Ernakulam Districts of Kerala. Volunteers counted the House Sparrows between 19 March 2018 and 25 March 2018. All the records were uploaded to eBird and downloaded the data for analysis.
Totally 240 individuals of House Sparrow reported from 38 checklists of eBird from the above districts (Figure 2) and totally 271 individuals reported from the entire Kerala. The other districts which reported the sparrow during the survey period were Kasaragod, Wayanad, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram (Figure 1). About 12% of the total checklist uploaded to eBird during the survey period contain House Sparrow. More than 17,000 individuals of birds reported during this period and out of that 1.4% are House Sparrow.
