Kole Birders, a group of voluntary bird watchers, came together at the Vazhani dam on Sunday to organise the Salim Ali Memorial Bird Walk, commemorating the Birdman of India’s birthday, which falls on November 12.
More than 20 people took part in the walk which began at 6.30 am and spotted as many as 55 species including Black Eagle (കരിമ്പരുന്ത്). ebird checklist https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S49905691
“Ali had stopped at Wadakkancherry in 1933 during his in his visit to Travancore-Cochin. He had spotted 103 species in the region and described the vegetation here as semi-evergreen to moist broad-leaf forest regions including small hills. But once the dam was built, the ecology and presence of birds changed a lot and the studies after that has revealed it. While Ali didn’t report the presence of any water birds, recent surveys have mentioned lots of them,” said senior bird watcher and conservationist Raju S, who works with Thanal, a not-for-profit organisation.
Raju said while the forest region in Vazhani is somewhat moist, the character changes as it gets nearer to the Palakkad pass and the presence of birds and other animals too gets varied according to it.
Vazhani dam and adjacent forest area is a part of Peechi-Vazhani Wild life sanctuary, frequented by passionate bird watchers.
